Martha Smith’s Quilt

This traditional 2-sided patchwork quilt was made by Martha Smith, one of the ringleaders in the incident. It is said that she worked on the quilt whilst in prison (but this is unlikely), and that it was later completed by her daughter, Ellen Beauchamp.

The quilt is now in the care of the People’s History Museum in Manchester where it is on display throughout 2023. https://phm.org.uk/exhibitions/2023-banner-exhibition

It is here seen displayed at the Oxfordshire Museum, Woodstock in 2018, alongside a newly created hanging textile made by a group of local women, guided by a Workers Educational Association tutor and inspired by the story of the Martyrs. This contemporary quilt is on permanent display in the parish church in Ascott under Wychwood.
